Digging around in our archive recently we came across a trove of Betamax and U-matic video tapes from the early 90s. We dusted of the old tape deck and had a look at some of them. One was titled “Appalachian Traditional Arts ‘Sampler’” and it contained clips of interviews, songs and jams from all over Southwest Virginia. The 21-minute film features a young Wayne Henderson in a jam, Emily and Spencer Thornton on Whitetop Mountain, the late Audrey Hash Ham talking about her father Albert Hash’s methods for finding material and John Jackson. We believe this tape is from around 1991. If anyone can tell us the festival where Wayne is performing we would love to know.
