The Virginia Folklife Program sponsored and participated in the fifth annual HoustonFest in Galax, Virginia, on May 1 and 2. HoustonFest commemorates the life of Houston Caldwell, a bluegrass banjo player who died at a young age. This year’s festival featured legends of the bluegrass world like Marty Stuart and Doyle Lawson as well as dozens of young musicians who performed on the Camp Houston stage. The Festival’s celebration of youth musicians proves Houston’s legacy is alive and thriving.
As part of the Festival, Virginia State Folklorist Jon Lohman hosted a gospel and bluegrass workshop with Doyle Lawson, Jesse McReynolds, and the Chuck Wagon Gang. Enjoy this riveting listen:
